Spending cuts could cost 400,000 West Midlands jobs

Almost 400,000 jobs across the West Midlands are at risk of disappearing as a result of the Government’s emergency cuts and the economy will not recover to pre-recession levels until 2030, it is claimed.

The dire prediction is contained in research carried out for the region’s councils in the run up to the Comprehensive Spending Review.

The paper, by the Regional Observatory, says that 17,000 public sector jobs will go in Birmingham alone in just six years.

City council leaders have already asked all staff to consider whether they wish to volunteer for redundancy and expects to have to cut budgets by £330 million by 2015.

According to the research, 80,000 public sector jobs across the West Midlands are likely to be lost and 310,000 jobs in the private sector which are dependent on contracts from councils and other agencies are under threat.

The Observatory predicts 35,000 job losses in the education sector, 30,000 in health and social care and nearly 18,000 in other public sector organisations such as the police and fire services, local authorities and regional offices of national government and other public bodies
