Changes to "Birmingham Contract" concessions
Tories and Liberal Democrats running Birmingham City Council have agreed to make major concessions in order to sweeten a cost-cutting plan that will sweep away unsocial hours payments and wage perks for 26,000 employees.
Major changes to working conditions, known as the Birmingham Contract, will not now be introduced until October and will be accompanied by an 18-month pay protection plan guaranteeing that no one will lose more than 10 per cent of their salary.
The climbdown was announced at a scrutiny committee meeting by cabinet member Alan Rudge, who was being grilled by councillors in a private session about the impact of the Birmingham Contract, which will save the council almost £10 million a year.
